Sylvan Learning of Schererville Wins Most Improved Revenue with New Ownership

by Sylvan Learning | Sep 27, 2017

Kent Kolbow, Sylvan Learning franchisee, bought out three Sylvan centers in Northwest Indiana last year--Schererville, Merrillville and Valparaiso--doubled the staff at each of them and watched his businesses grow.

"Our philosophy is we staff to grow the business," said Kolbow. "While we're here to make money, we also strive to have success with every student who walks through the door. That results in good word-of-mouth. They'll tell their friends and they'll tell their friends."

His plan worked when the Sylvan Learning of Schererville location saw a 60 percent jump in revenue, and won a company-wide award for the most improved revenue between 2015 and 2016. Jackie Galambos, the center director, also won a director of the year award from Sylvan for helping struggling students.

Kolbow still spends about 15 hours in the classroom teaching, and is the owner of 11 total Sylvan centers. He believes Sylvan is a great resource and partner of schools.

"When students are struggling, we can work on their individualized skill gaps to move them up to grade level," said Kolbow. "We work with advanced students who want a 98, not a 92, in advanced chemistry class. We're looking to increase STEM programs, with robotic science and math courses."
