Meet Our Team

As the Centre Director for the Ranchlands location, Avery administers assessments and manages scheduling and student programs. Before becoming a director, Avery used to be a tutor/teacher at this Sylvan location and holds a Bachelors of Sociology, and a minor in Creative Writing. She also holds a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification. When Avery isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her cooking, reading, running, and spending time with family.

Derick

Tutor/Teacher

Meet one of our tutors at Sylvan, Derick Young. Derick has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Calgary, and his enthusiasm for math and physics is evident in the way he approaches tutoring. He’s a great complement to our team because of his knowledge in these areas and his commitment to seeing students thrive. When Derick isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find him coding or playing volleyball.

Fikayo

Tutor/Teacher

Fikayo is a versatile teacher, who is able to teach almost all grade levels and subjects. Though he specializes in Math, Physics, and Chemistry. He also mentors high school students about time management and general life skills. When not at Sylvan, he likes to work on sustainability projects.

Nagwa

Tutor/Teacher

Nagwa is a retired surgeon, with a background in education. She has a gift for working with children of all ages in the Sylvan reading, math and study skills programs.  While Nagwa has many talents, she has special expertise in tutoring high level biology and putting young students at ease in our literacy program.   She finds greatest joy in seeing her students grasp the meaning of the material.   Nagwa is fluent in Arabic and when she isn’t at Sylvan, you’ll find her teaching English to newcomers from all over the world.

Bio: Elijah is an enthusiastic teacher who values student confidence. He believes that building
their self-esteem is the single most powerful way to help students take control of their learning.
Elijah’s broad academic background in both Biology and Linguistics makes him flexible to each
student’s individual needs, but his true passion is Chemistry and Physics. In his free time, Elijah
likes to read fantasy novels, practice Mandarin Chinese, and play strategy games.

Jack

Tutor/Teacher

Jack is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Calgary working towards his bachelors of sciences in physics. As a tutor Jack specializes in chemistry physics and math; but is versatile and can teach students of all grade levels and subjects. Jack is a conscientious tutor who seeks to see all of  his students succeed. In his free time Jack plays for a local Australian Rules Football team and trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
