Our tutors and staff in Lake Wylie/Clover consist of passionate educators who love inspiring children to succeed. Warm, caring and great at relating to kids, our tutors in Lake Wylie/Clover know how to engage and motivate each child in a personal way—building confidence and smiles, as well as skills and better scores. We selectively choose tutors who know local curriculum and can link Sylvan lessons to what’s being taught in school.

Nancy Shrewsbury
Owner & Executive Director
Nancy is a retired educator with over 20 years of experience as an elementary teacher. Nancy’s desire to continue helping children learn and succeed led her and her husband Joe to open two Sylvan Learning locations in Lake Wylie and Rock Hill, SC. Nancy received her B.A. in elementary education and M.Ed. concentration in reading education at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. She was National Board Certified in literacy for elementary and middle education. In her free time, she enjoys reading, hiking, movies, and spending time with her 3 adult children.

Chasity Agurs
Instructor Math/SAT & ACT Test Prep
Chasity Agurs, a graduate from the University of South Carolina double majored in Biochemistry and Spanish. Hitting the ground running, Chasity considers herself attentive and determined. She is eager to help students achieve their College Prep and academic goals. If Chasity is not at Sylvan Learning you can find her journaling, reading, and indulging in anything that relates to science.

Pietrina Marta
Tutor
Pietrina (Trina) worked as a classroom teacher for over 20 years teaching middle school students English, reading, World History, AP American History, and American Law and Government. In Wilmington, DE, she helped establish a program called EMMAUS that helped guide students to become self-advocates for their education. Pietrina has been tutoring for over 30 years and has tutored students in many grade levels. In addition to her older students, she also enjoys teaching beginning readers. When not tutoring, Pietrina enjoys spending time with her grandson.

James Kabbash
Instructor
James graduated from of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in criminal justice. Since retiring from that field, James has become a highly sought-after substitute teacher in a local school district. He also has experience advocating for and working with children with special needs. He has had ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) training and experience as well. James has a passion for teaching and wants to help all students succeed.
Carole Johnson
Instructor
Carole graduated from Lenoir Rhyne University as a middle grades education major. She is certified in NC to teach English Language Arts and Social Studies for grades 6 – 9; She is also an AIG certified teacher (academically intellectually gifted). She has been teaching in NC public schools for 27 years
Her classroom experience is in 7th and 8th grade and she has also been a small group resource teacher for grades 6-8. She is currently an 8th grade English Language Arts teacher for Gaston County Schools, but Carol also enjoys teaching elementary students at Sylvan.

Kelly Augustin
Instructor
Kelly is a certified elementary teacher and currently teaches in Gaston County. She attended Alfred University in New York for her undergrad work and went to Western Connecticut State University for her master’s degree. She has taught for 32 years from preschool to 5th grade. When Kelly is not teaching school or working at Sylvan, she is a busy dance mom and also enjoys playing the clarinet in the local orchestra.

Emilio Flores
Emilio has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in structural engineering from the University of NC at Charlotte. After working his full-time job as an engineer, Emilio comes to Sylvan to teach high school and college level math. He also does a great job helping college-bound students prepare for the SAT and ACT. In his free time, Emilio enjoys astronomy and playing the guitar at his church.
