Casey Kirk

Director

I am one of the directors at Sylvan of Slidell. I focus on meeting with new families to review assessment results, explaining how our program works, and discussing tuition options. I also help parents set a schedule that works for them. In addition to these tasks, I fulfill many other jobs at the center. I started my career as a junior high math teacher after graduating from Belhaven College in Jackson, MS., in 2006. I spent 11 years in the classroom. I believe in Sylvan’s program. I have seen many students grow and achieve success. This program works. I was going to start my own tutoring company, but then I found Sylvan. Why try to reinvent the wheel when they have done the job so well? As a student at Belhaven, I was awarded the MS. Professional Educator of the Year 2005 Award for future teachers. I enjoy spending time with my son, Gabe, and our two dogs. I love being outdoors, whether doing yard work or gardening. I attend church at Harvest Barn, where I am involved with the food pantry and the youth.

Cheryl Jackson

Director

At Sylvan, I have many responsibilities. I assess all new incoming students and discuss the results with Casey so that we can develop an individualized learning plan. I also give progress assessments when they come due. Additionally, I manage the many admin duties and educational responsibilities around the center. I earned my BAE in Sp.Ed/Elem.Ed in 1987 from the University of New Orleans and my M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction/Administration in 1993 from Nicholls State University, where I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Before joining Sylvan, I taught in the public school systems of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
I have been in classrooms from first grade through high school, covering a wide range of subjects. I enjoyed it all. I started at Sylvan in 2020 as a tutor and have progressed to a director role. I truly see the work that Sylvan does changing students’ lives and growing their skills. I have seen many students make progress that they never thought possible and achieve grades they never imagined were attainable. It excites me when this happens, and I want to share this with more students. In my downtime, I enjoy doing crossword puzzles, reading, and playing with my dog, Abbie. I also enjoy spending time with my friends from the Mardi Gras krewe I ride with, having fundraisers, and just having fun.

Cheryl Dean

Teacher

I hold a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Secondary Education with a focus on English graduating Summa Cum Laude, and a Master of Education (M.Ed.) from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. With over 30 years of teaching experience at the junior high level, as well as, the first-grade level, I am well-equipped to support students. As a Sylvan tutor, my goal is to create a positive learning environment that makes learning an enjoyable experience. I love seeing students succeed in the classroom and life. I have worked at the center for the past two years. I enjoy working with the students here, and there is never a dull day. In my personal life, I have three grown children whom I love spending time with, and three beautiful grandchildren whom I enjoy spoiling.

Barbara Carney

Teacher

I am a secondary-level math teacher, but here at Sylvan, I work with students from Pre-K through college. I also work with those studying for the ACT and ASVAB. I began working at Sylvan in 2011. Before that, I taught high school math in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Kentucky. I also taught math in Louisiana for 11 years and then transitioned to working with homebound and K.I.T. students. I enjoy working one-on-one with the students and watching them gain confidence in their abilities. I am a graduate of Boston College with a BA and the University of New Orleans with my M.Ed. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston College. In my free time, I enjoy gardening, painting, and reading. I enjoy spending time with my children and grandchildren. I also volunteer at the food pantry at my church several times a month.
