Kaila Barker

Owner/Center Director

With over twenty years of experience in education, Kaila brings passion and innovation to our academic tutoring programs and STEM enrichment. Having worked with school districts across the nation, Kaila has developed and scaled successful educational programs from the ground up and brings both creative vision and practical expertise to our center’s operations. 

Kaila’s priority is creating an environment where students don’t just learn – they discover their potential and develop a genuine love for learning. Her approach emphasizes building confidence alongside competence, ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.

As a mother of five, Kaila’s experience has been further deepened her understanding of how each child learns differently and her commitment to creating educational programs that work for every student’s unique abilities.

Kelly

Director of Education, Teacher of Advanced ELA, SAT/ACT

A longtime teacher at Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida, Kelly instructs advanced courses including IB HL Language A: Literature, AP English Literature and Composition, and AP English Language and Composition. She also serves as the IB School Librarian and Extended Essay Coordinator, guiding over 200 students annually through rigorous research and writing. Nationally Board Certified since 2007 and Gifted Endorsed, she has held leadership roles with the International Baccalaureate as a Lead Examiner and Standardization Team member, and as an AP English Literature Exam Reader for the College Board. Earlier in her career, she held Director of Education and Center Director positions at Sylvan centers in Texas, North Carolina, and Florida.
Kelly holds a Master’s in Education (Curriculum and Development) and a Bachelor’s in English Literature from the University of Florida. Passionate about equity in education, advanced academics, and student growth, she excels at mentoring teachers, preparing students for success on high-stakes exams, and fostering a love of literature and critical thinking in every learner.

Jennifer

Teacher of Elementary Reading and Math, and Center Administrator

Jennifer is currently a teacher and operations manager for our Sylvan Learning. She has been an educator and tutor for several years, holding a Bachelor’s in Language Education from USILACS and an ESL Certification. Since 2022, she has served as an online reading coach, working with elementary and middle school students below grade level to enhance their reading skills and comprehension through personalized guidance. She’s also worked as as an ESL Teacher, engaging online English lessons using props, Total Physical Response (TPR), and error correction techniques to build correct language skills.
Her background in administrative and customer service roles honed her organizational and interpersonal abilities, and she serves in a variety of operational and administrative capacities at Sylvan, ensuring that students and parents have a consistently exceptional experience with every learning session.

Cathie

Teacher of Elementary Math and ELA

Catherine has been an educator for over 20 years, with a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Central Florida and a K-6 Teaching Certification including ESOL and Reading Endorsements. Currently serving as an Intervention Tutor at Orange County Public Schools, she teaches reading skills one-on-one or in small groups to support student progress. Since 2019, as an Intervention Teacher at Seminole County Public Schools, she creates tailored lesson plans for tier 2 and tier 3 students in reading and math, while assisting classroom teachers and fostering supportive learning environments.
From 2007 to 2014, she taught 3rd and 5th grades at Orange County Public Schools, honing skills in classroom management, math instruction, and student engagement. Catherine is passionate about individualized support, attention to detail, and creating organized, positive spaces where students feel respected and motivated to grow. She believes in building strong foundational skills through patient, interactive teaching that cultivates curiosity and confidence in every learner.

Elijah

Teacher of Advanced Math and Sciences, SAT/ACT

Elijah provides support for all levels and subjects for our students, with a particular concentration in advanced math and science. Passionate about STEM education and outreach, he brings hands-on experience from his role as a Research Assistant at the Florida Space Institute, and as a Learning Assistant in UCF’s Physics Department, where he supported students during lectures, answered questions, and facilitated labs, honing techniques to help learners grasp challenging concepts and build strong study habits.
He is currently completing his degree in physics at the University of Central Florida, specializing in astronomy with a minor in mathematics. Elijah excels in public speaking, problem-solving, and team leadership, demonstrated through his position as Sousaphone Section Leader in the UCF Marching Knights and Concert Band. A member of the Astronomy Society and Society of Physics Students, he also completed a Numerical Computing course in Python. With a background in high school AP courses, robotics, and bands, Elijah knows how to reach our students and make math and science fun and accessible.

Andrew

Teacher of Reading / Math / SAT / ACT / Writing / ESOL

Andrew has been an educator for over 10 years and has tutored students of all ages in a variety of subjects, including special needs, and holds an ESOL certification. He has a Master’s in Interactive Entertainment from UCF’s award-winning FIEA program, and he’s a big proponent of combining technology and learning. He believes that skills like coding, data analysis, and AI prompting aren’t just the future – they’re the present. He’s also interested in political science, philosophy, literature, and environmental activism. Teaching is his passion and he makes a point of cultivating curiosity in his students, and always treating them with respect.

Mathematics / SAT / ACT

Cassandra has a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education and has served as a high school math educator for the past 14 years. With experience spanning from Pre-K to high school levels, Cassandra has taught students of all ages and has developed AP Calculus coursework. Cassandra specializes in helping students overcome math struggles and building their confidence in mathematical concepts. Cassandra’s passion for education stems from her desire to make a positive contribution to young people’s lives and help them achieve success regardless of the challenges they face. When she is not helping students discover their mathematical potential, Cassandra enjoys spending time with family and continuing to develop new ways to make math accessible and engaging for all learners.
