Phonics

With 4th grade reading tutoring, your child will learn how to:

  • Identify letters of the alphabet
  • Easily read and decode words with more than one syllable, including the sounds represented by consonants and vowels, consonant blends and digraphs (for example, block, crumb, strand, chin), vowel digraphs and diphthongs (for example, join, mouse, bee, tea) and r-controlled vowels (i.e., car, bear, pier)
  • Break a word down into syllables, or use syllabication
  • Recognize suffixes and inflectional endings (for example, books, started, singing, gladly)
  • Identify compound words

Vocabulary

With 4th grade reading tutoring, your child will learn how to:

  • Determine the meaning of a word based on its use
  • Sort familiar words into categories based on their meaning (for example, colors, shapes, etc.)

  • Identify the words that make up a contraction

  • Identify common synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms
  • Use knowledge of the root of a word to determine its meaning
