Distance Learning Tips from Sylvan Learning on KOIN 6

by Sylvan Learning | Apr 08, 2020

Parents across the country are understandably concerned about the missed school time during the many "Stay Home" orders in place across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On top of that, a lot of pressure has fallen onto parents' laps in regards to ensuring their kids aren't falling behind while at home.

To provide some guidance, Kim Dorn of Sylvan Learning in Portland, Oregon, shared some information about Sylvan's local, supplemental program options.

Kim notes that between about 3 months of missed traditional classroom time due to the global pandemic, and the typical summer learning slide that ensues every year, students are in a difficult position leading up to the 2020-2021 school year.

Luckily, Sylvan has launched a variety of live, online tutoring programs for kids in grades K-12. Local Sylvan tutors are available to help your child stay on track right from your home!

Distance Learning Tips

  1. Set a schedule. Choose what activities your child can do independently and have him or her work on those while you're working or busy. Then, leave time in your schedule to help your child with subjects he or she may need assistance with.

  2. Take screen breaks! Remember to have your child take a break from online learning between subjects, projects or activities. Even if it's just for 10 minutes.

  3. Not all learning has to be done with a screen. Get ideas on SylvanNation.com, Sylvan's FREE resource for parents. This website has tons of tips, tools, printable worksheets and ideas for off-screen learning ideas. (And, accounts are always free. No hidden fees, ever.)

  4. Pick up Sylvan workbooks from your local Sylvan to help reinforce skills.
