If you’ve been to a Sylvan center or visited our website recently, you’ve probably noticed our new look. We still have the same great programs your family has always loved – personalized tutoring, test prep and STEM enrichment – we’ve simply refreshed our look so families can quickly find the best fit for them.
With that being said, we’re excited to announce our newest program, Academic Coaching! We’ve talked with our VP of Education, Emily Levitt, to get the scoop on what this program is all about, and who can benefit most from it.
What is Academic Coaching?
Academic Coaching is a maintenance program for the student who is very close to grade level, either a little behind or a little ahead, and needs extra practice to keep up or an added challenge. This program is ideal for students who need help with a particular unit, skill or project. And the best part is, Academic Coaching is just as affordable as any other after-school activity, making it a great resource for families!
How does Academic Coaching work?
Families can purchase one-hour Academic Coaching sessions in affordable monthly packages for students K-8. Sessions can be used to help students in reading, writing, math, algebra, geometry, study skills, STEM and more! Sessions are taught by our expert tutors, who understand how to teach the standards expected by the school and make concepts click. With a 3:1 student to teacher ratio, students benefit from being able to ask questions and get support from the tutor, while also being afforded time to independently complete work.
How is Academic Coaching different from Personalized Tutoring?
Personalized Tutoring is a highly personalized approach to learning that includes very specific goals for students each session. Whereas, Academic Coaching does not have pre-planned lessons, instead it is a student-lead program. Students bring in their questions and/or work from school and tutors help guide and support the student. The flexibility of this program allows the tutor to supplement student work with enriching material, and is perfect for supporting your child as he or she continues to encounter new activities.
How do other tutoring solutions measure up to Academic Coaching?
We’ve compared Academic Coaching to private tutors, Kumon and Mathnasium. To see how the Academic Coaching measures up, check out our comparison chart.
